Evernote has reintroduced the tabbed view, but are its increasing prices driving loyal users away?
If you’re an expert Evernote user, there’s exciting news! Evernote has officially reinstated tabbed notes, a feature that Mac users appreciated before it was removed in October 2020. When Evernote completely rebuilt its app for a consistent cross-platform experience across Windows, Mac, and desktop, the tab feature was entirely eliminated.
At that time, tabs were exclusive to Mac users and never available on Windows, leading to their removal in favor of uniformity across platforms. Now, five years later, they’re back and can be used on both Mac and Windows.
So, how do tabs function in Evernote now?
Opening a note in a new tab is simple. You can right-click on any note in the note list, sidebar, or via the three-dot menu, and select "Open in New Tab." Additionally, there’s a plus button to the right of your open tabs that allows you to quickly open a new one.
You can customize what a new tab defaults to opening, whether it’s your home page, all notes, or all notebooks, by navigating to Settings, then Preferences, and finally Application. Tabs can also be dragged and reordered to help prioritize notes during a hectic workday.
But there’s more to this update
Tabs are not just for notes; you can also open Tasks, Calendar, Home, Notebooks, and Templates in separate tabs. Keyboard shortcuts are available as well, such as Ctrl and Cmd and O to open the currently active note in a new tab, and Cmd and W to close a tab.
A particularly handy feature is the red pulsing dot on a tab when a recording is in progress, so you always know which note is capturing audio.
This is fantastic, but Evernote’s rising costs are hard to overlook
The reintroduction of tabs and the new AI features in version 11 clearly signals Evernote’s attempt to regain users. For those who rely heavily on Evernote, this latest update brings exciting and useful features.
However, Evernote’s pricing has significantly increased over the years. In 2026, the company implemented a hefty price rise, nearly doubling subscription fees to $250 annually.
What used to be cherished for providing great value at a low cost has now transformed into a premium productivity suite, integrating AI tools, calendar synchronization, and task management into every subscription tier, regardless of whether you want those features.
For users who exceed 20 notebooks or use more than three synced devices, the more economical Starter plan at $99 is no longer viable. To complicate matters further, the new pricing introduced a 1GB total storage limit on the Starter tier, a stark contrast to the previous unlimited storage policy. For perspective, $100 a year provides 2TB of storage on Google.
Long-time users who have remained loyal to Evernote through various changes are now considering alternatives like Notion and Notesnook, attracted by better value, unlimited storage on free tiers, and cleaner interfaces without mandatory AI features. Are you planning to stay with Evernote, or have the price increases finally pushed you to seek other options?
