It's only $1, but Netflix is once more increasing the cost for your streaming service.

Our service has seen improvements recently. Now, it's time to pay!

This isn't exactly new, but it follows a familiar pattern. Here we are again: Netflix has discreetly increased the prices of its subscription packages. To start, the basic tier that sometimes features ads has risen to $8.99 per month from the previous $7.99.

      What else has changed?

In its usual manner, Netflix adheres to the principle that "you shall pay more to see fewer ads." This approach sees the company not only raising the prices for its basic plan but also increasing the costs of its Standard and Premium subscriptions, which allow viewers to enjoy content ad-free. The Premium plan's price has jumped from $24.99 to $26.99, while the Standard (ad-free) plan will now cost $19.99, up from $17.99.

But that’s not all. Remember how Netflix expressed its frustration over account sharing by introducing a plan to allow additional members on existing accounts? Now, if you want to add someone to your Standard plan, it will cost $7.99 per additional user monthly, a rise from the previous $6.99. These extra users will also have to deal with ads like the original member. Should you wish for these new members to experience ad-free viewing, you’ll need to pay $9.99 each month for them.

If you and a co-subscriber want to avoid ads while enjoying the Premium plan, the cost for adding a new member has increased from $8.99 to $9.99 per month. While it might only be a dollar or two, the increase is now in effect. Based on the trends of techno-capitalism, it’s unlikely we’ll see a return to cheaper times.

      But why is this happening?

Netflix has indicated to TechCrunch that the recent price hike is a kind of subtle tax for the enhancements made to its service and the elevation of quality standards. This vague explanation feels somewhat underwhelming, yet here we are.

Regarding the new pricing model, it will take effect for new subscribers starting March 26, while existing customers will experience the one-dollar increase in the upcoming months. As a considerate gesture, Netflix will notify users via email a month in advance about the price changes.

If it offers any comfort, Netflix also features an impressive array of games. Perhaps now is the perfect opportunity to explore some of those titles and maximize your subscription investment? I highly recommend games like “Red Dead Redemption,” “TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge,” “Dead Cells,” “Street Fighter IV CE,” “Oxenfree,” “WWE 2K25: Netflix Edition,” and “Into the Breach.”

The price increase for the ad-free plan is two dollars. Additionally, if you include a co-subscriber, there will be an additional charge for them as well.
