ChatGPT will not be receiving an erotic mode, after all.
OpenAI withdraws as “adult mode” faces escalating concerns
If you were hoping for an “erotic mode” in ChatGPT, that concept is now officially off the agenda. As reported by Financial Times, OpenAI’s adult mode is on hold “indefinitely.”
Inside OpenAI’s challenges in developing the adult mode
OpenAI’s proposed “adult mode” for ChatGPT was never intended to be completely explicit. Initial reports suggested it would be confined to text-based erotic content with strict guidelines to prevent graphic or unsafe material. This feature was also anticipated to be available only to verified adult users, adding another layer of control.
However, the launch faced continuous delays. OpenAI attributed these setbacks to safety concerns, technical limitations, and the need to prioritize enhancements to ChatGPT's fundamental capabilities.
The company has decided to refocus on its core products for the time being. This decision comes amid apprehensions from both employees and investors regarding the broader implications of sexualized AI content.
OpenAI has expressed its intention to investigate the long-term effects of explicit interactions and emotional dependency before arriving at a final decision, acknowledging that there is currently no reliable evidence to inform such choices.
Why OpenAI’s retreat is sensible at this moment
Since the announcement of an erotic mode for ChatGPT aimed at adults, numerous concerns have surfaced. AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, are entangled in legal disputes linked to conversations that have resulted in tragic outcomes. Over the past few years, there have been several suicides and violent incidents associated with AI influence.
Last year, a couple from California filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming their son took his own life after being encouraged by ChatGPT. Matthew Bergman at the Social Media Victims Law Center has filed seven lawsuits against OpenAI, including one with Laura Marquez-Garrett, whose 17-year-old son also committed suicide after chatting with ChatGPT.
Additionally, there have been multiple cases where ChatGPT provided harmful medical advice, including one that led to a rare bromide poisoning in an individual. The psychological effects are concerning as well, with users reportedly forming intense and troubling connections with AI personalities.
Recently, OpenAI also discontinued its Sora AI video generator, which faced copyright issues and spawned some unsettling internet trends. In light of these troubling events, it seems prudent for OpenAI to abandon its plans for an “adult mode” in ChatGPT rather than take on additional risks.
