You can now explore Shopify stores and make purchases directly within ChatGPT.

OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT's shopping features, making it simpler to explore brand stores powered by Shopify and purchase products through a more adaptable checkout process. This update is part of the company’s initiative towards “agentic commerce,” which aims to enhance product discovery and simplify transactions.
Is OpenAI moving away from Instant Checkout?
Last year, OpenAI launched ChatGPT's Instant Checkout feature, which enabled users to make purchases directly within the chat interface. This capability was driven by its Agentic Commerce Protocol and was compatible with platforms including Etsy and Shopify, as well as retailers like Walmart and Sam’s Club.
Nonetheless, Instant Checkout did not gain significant traction. Recent reports have indicated that OpenAI is redirecting its focus from providing a native checkout experience in ChatGPT to enabling merchants to develop their own app integrations that direct users to their website's checkout process.

The company has officially confirmed this transition, indicating that the “initial version of Instant Checkout did not provide the level of flexibility” it aimed to achieve. Instead, it will enable merchants to utilize their own checkout systems while OpenAI concentrates on enhancing product discovery.
What’s new with shopping in ChatGPT?
With the recent update, OpenAI is adopting this new strategy. Rather than handling the entire process within ChatGPT, the chatbot now emphasizes assisting users in browsing Shopify-powered brand storefronts and completing purchases within those contexts.
In its announcement, Shopify states that merchants can build “agentic storefronts” that integrate with ChatGPT, making their products searchable and available for purchase during conversations. This means you can request recommendations from ChatGPT, examine a brand’s catalog, and finish purchases via an in-app browser.
This shift grants retailers greater control over their storefronts while still allowing them to leverage ChatGPT for product discovery. Consequently, OpenAI is redefining ChatGPT as a shopping assistant and discovery tool rather than a comprehensive checkout platform.
In addition to Shopify brands, retailers like Target, Sephora, and Nordstrom also support ChatGPT’s updated product discovery feature. This rollout is expected to reach all ChatGPT free, Go, Plus, and Pro users this week.
