OnePlus' newest compact flagship serves as a disappointing reminder that increases in phone prices are still ongoing.

Compact phones in the past often came with a caveat. While they offered the convenience of a more manageable size for one-handed use, they also came with trade-offs like a smaller battery, limited thermal performance, and other compromises that highlighted why standard flagship models continue to grow in size.

The OnePlus 15T distinguishes itself by incorporating a substantial tablet-like battery into a device with a 6.32-inch display. This sets it apart from similarly sized competitors, such as Samsung's Galaxy S26, which favors slim design over large battery capacity.

However, there is a drawback, less related to OnePlus and more about the direction of the industry.

Compact on the outside, premium on the inside.

The OnePlus 15T features a user-friendly 6.32-inch AMOLED screen with a 1.5K resolution and a refresh rate that reaches up to 165Hz, along with an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor for security. The phone utilizes Oppo’s Crystal Shield Glass on the front and measures 8.35mm thick while weighing 194 grams. Thus, despite having a significantly larger battery, it remains thinner and lighter than Google's Pixel 10.

Internally, it is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC, paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X Ultra Pro RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage. To enhance gaming performance, OnePlus has incorporated a large 5150mm² vapor chamber and a G2 gaming network chip.

A standout feature is the 7,500mAh Glacier Battery, which supports 100W wired fast charging, 50W wireless charging, and offers bypass charging functionality. Its predecessor omitted wireless charging entirely, making this a notable improvement. The company claims users can expect 10.3 hours of MOBA gaming or 40.5 hours of video streaming on a full charge.

The camera configuration includes a 50MP Sony main shooter and a 50MP periscope telephoto lens with a longer 3.5x optical zoom alongside OIS and capabilities for 8K video recording and 4K120fps Dolby Vision. On the front, there is a 16MP camera for selfies.

Another significant enhancement is the overall durability, as the OnePlus 15T achieves IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings.

      So what’s the drawback?

With all these upgrades, OnePlus is also concealing some less appealing aspects. The OnePlus 15T has just launched in China starting at 4,299 yuan, equating to around $624. In contrast, the OnePlus 13T debuted at 3,399 yuan, or about $490 (approximately $446 in 2025). This represents a substantial increase, especially for the Chinese market. Consequently, it doesn’t exactly instill confidence for upcoming phone releases later this year.

This is where the 15T transitions from a OnePlus narrative to a broader discussion about pricing trends in 2026. The smartphone market is facing increasing pressures across all segments, and devices are not immune to these challenges.

A high-quality phone can still launch at an inopportune time.

The company isn’t merely being greedy or overly ambitious. The overall smartphone sector is experiencing significant cost pressures due to rising memory prices. Gartner predicts that these rising memory costs could result in a 13% increase in smartphone prices by 2026, while TrendForce indicates that brands are already adjusting prices and scaling back specifications as DRAM and NAND prices rise. Reports have suggested that high-end RAM and storage configurations can now exceed the costs of the advanced processors used in flagship devices.

On one side, the OnePlus 15T represents the type of compact flagship consumers have been requesting: a smaller form factor, significant battery life, and top-tier hardware. On the other hand, its price point serves as a cautionary signal for the rest of 2026.

Last year’s OnePlus 13T was introduced as a value flagship, but the 15T does not seem as appealing. For instance, the Pixel 10 has already seen prices drop below $600 due to substantial discounts, making the OnePlus's competition with base flagships an uncomfortable comparison.
