Shortages in inventory indicate that product launches are imminent, yet delays suggest a different narrative.
Apple seems to have new products in the pipeline, but they are not being released just yet. A recent Bloomberg report indicates that stock for devices such as the HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV is dwindling across Apple Stores worldwide.
Typically, this would be a clear indicator that new models are on the way. However, this time there is a complication. Apple is reportedly postponing launches because its upcoming Siri and AI features are not yet ready.
What is causing these delays?
The primary factor is that Siri is still lagging behind. The report mentions that Apple has had updated versions of at least the HomePod mini and Apple TV prepared since last year but opted not to release them because they wanted to launch them alongside the new AI-driven Siri experience. The intention was likely to introduce enhanced hardware with the smarter software. Unfortunately, those AI advancements are still not finalized.
Interestingly, while these AI capabilities are expected to be central to a future Apple smart home hub, they are merely supplementary for devices like the HomePod and Apple TV. This raises the possibility that Apple might eventually decide to release the hardware rather than wait indefinitely.
What does this imply for Apple's future plans?
Currently, the supply situation appears somewhat unpredictable. The HomePod mini is somewhat hard to find, with limited store inventory and shipping delays extending into the next month. The standard HomePod is faring a bit better, while the Apple TV is still readily available as if nothing is amiss.
All of these elements suggest that Apple is caught in a waiting game. The hardware seems ready, but Siri's AI enhancements are not, and Apple seems reluctant to launch one without the other. At some stage, they will need to decide: continue waiting for Siri to catch up or proceed with shipping the products regardless. In any case, the delays are starting to affect actual product launches, in addition to software difficulties.
