China's enthusiasm for OpenClaw is driving up the prices of secondhand Macs, and this trend seems to be just beginning.

The surge in AI technology has already inflated RAM and SSD costs, making new laptops and desktops pricier. Now, this uptick is beginning to affect the used laptop market as well.

OpenClaw, an AI tool that has gained immense popularity in China, is impacting prices in surprising ways. For those who aren't familiar, OpenClaw is an AI agent capable of managing personal tasks independently, such as sending emails and online shopping.

Why are consumers purchasing used MacBooks for OpenClaw?

Although OpenClaw is available for free, it poses security risks. To mitigate these risks, many users opt to run it on a dedicated device, leading a considerable number to seek out secondhand Macs. This heightened demand is causing a significant rise in used Mac prices.

A CNBC report highlighted Jeremy Ji, Chief Strategy Officer at ATRenew, a used electronics reseller associated with Apple and JD.com in China. He remarked that the spike in demand feels reminiscent of the pandemic period.

Between March and May of this year, prices for used Apple products have remained at levels consistent with the peak fall season around new iPhone launches, typically their highest point. This is atypical for spring, which usually sees a decrease in prices.

The Mac Mini has emerged as the preferred option for early adopters of OpenClaw, primarily due to Apple’s energy-efficient proprietary chips. This trend has resulted in a 15% increase in the prices of used Macs sold through ATRenew.

Is this trend likely to persist?

Ji anticipates that the demand will endure throughout the year. ATRenew has had to increase its buyback prices to keep pace with supply. Last year, the company processed approximately 100,000 devices daily, and Ji predicts that laptops and PCs will grow to constitute 15% to 20% of its business.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has referred to OpenClaw as “definitely the next ChatGPT,” noting that it’s the most popular open-source project ever. With companies like Tencent and other Chinese tech firms embracing OpenClaw to gain users, demand in China currently surpasses that in the United States.

This trend looks set to continue and may accelerate as more people become accustomed to integrating AI into their daily routines. If you’re thinking about purchasing a new or used MacBook, now might be the right moment, as prices are projected to rise further in the near future.
