Google is preparing the Gemini AI application for Mac, featuring Desktop Intelligence.

Google is enhancing its AI offerings on desktop with a Gemini app specifically for Mac that is currently in testing, potentially introducing a significant new feature called Desktop Intelligence. A Bloomberg report indicates that Google has begun private testing of an early version of the Gemini Mac app with a select group of users. This development is part of a larger strategy to directly compete with desktop AI applications like ChatGPT and Claude, which already provide native experiences on Mac.

The present version of the app is still in its early stages and lacks all the intended features, but initial testing implies that Google is aiming for a near-term launch. Currently, Mac users primarily access Gemini via the web, so a dedicated app could greatly enhance the user experience.

      What will make it unique?

In recent months, the popularity of on-device and cross-app AI workflows has surged. Tools like Manus and Openclaw cater to power users, but everyday users are looking for AI that can utilize their local data (including emails, calendars, photos, etc.) without complex technical issues.

This is where Gemini becomes relevant. Google has recently launched Personal Intelligence for Gemini, allowing it to extract information from platforms such as Gmail, Photos, YouTube, and Search. Google is also integrating this function across Workspace tools like Drive. A similar function is being developed by Anthropic’s Claude Cowork within Microsoft’s Office 365 applications.

In general, the aim is to enable AI to access both on-device and cloud-based personal data, facilitating seamless work without the need to open multiple applications. Google presumably has a comparable vision for its Gemini app on Mac. Imagine an AI that can view all relevant information and has the context needed to respond to your inquiries. For instance, when asked about vacation ideas, it could check your Gmail for upcoming tickets, bookings, and itineraries to provide accurate suggestions.

"When you activate apps for Desktop Intelligence, you allow Gemini to view what you see (such as your screen context) and retrieve content from these apps to enhance and personalize your experience while Gemini is in operation," the code for the in-development app notes, according to Bloomberg.

      What is Desktop Intelligence?

The key feature being introduced is what Google refers to as Desktop Intelligence, which likely serves as the primary differentiator for the Mac app. Rather than solely depending on prompts, Gemini can observe what’s displayed on your screen and extract data directly from Mac applications, including your calendar, documents, or browser, to generate responses that are more context-aware.

In practical terms, this implies that Gemini is not merely responding to questions; it comprehends your activities. Whether it’s summarizing a document you are working on or assisting in planning based on your available data, the AI can deliver responses with much more relevant and timely context.

Even in its preliminary version, the app appears to be quite capable. Google is evaluating features such as image and video generation, coding assistance, document analysis, and web searches, as well as the capability to manage uploaded files and remember past conversations, thus positioning it comparable to other advanced AI assistants. Although Google has yet to announce an official release date, external testing is already in progress, suggesting that a public launch may be on the horizon.
