If this sounds familiar, it’s likely because it is. A recent global study linked to the World Happiness Report 2026 once more connects popular social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok with poorer mental health outcomes, particularly among younger individuals.
The report indicates that these platforms, which rely on algorithm-driven feeds and influencer-generated content, tend to have a more adverse effect on mental well-being compared to communication-focused apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook. This suggests that not all social media is viewed the same way anymore.

One of the main points from the report is that the way individuals use social media is more crucial than the amount of time they spend on it. The study suggests that platforms designed for passive scrolling and curated content are more closely linked to lower life satisfaction.
Conversely, apps that facilitate direct communication and social interactions tend to have more positive or neutral effects on mental well-being. Additionally, the report notes that moderate usage (approximately an hour daily) is associated with better mental health compared to excessive or minimal use.

The effects are most pronounced among younger users. Data mentioned in the report indicates that heavy social media use correlates with lower happiness levels. Adolescents who dedicate several hours a day to these platforms report significantly reduced life satisfaction, particularly among teenage girls.
The World Happiness Report highlights overwhelming evidence of widespread harm, including direct consequences like cyberbullying and indirect effects such as anxiety. As more international studies arrive at similar findings, it has become increasingly evident that these algorithm-driven platforms contribute to declining mental health.
Countries such as Australia have already begun to limit access to these platforms, and it seems that even app stores and search engines may not be exempt.
