      Kilmer's struggle with throat cancer meant he couldn't shoot his scenes. Nevertheless, Voorhees chose to keep the character in the story. He turned to generative AI and collaborated closely with Kilmer’s family to ensure the role was completed with sensitivity.

      That familial support was crucial in the decision-making process. “His family continuously expressed how significant they thought the movie was and how much Val wanted to be involved,” said Coerte Voorhees.

      “He truly believed it was an important story that he wanted his name associated with. It was that encouragement that gave me the confidence to proceed. Even though some might label it controversial, this was what Val desired.”

      The film, As Deep as the Grave, narrates the real-life story of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, as they delve into Navajo history. It features Abigail Lawrie and Tom Felton, with Wes Studi and Abigail Breslin in supporting roles.

      Kilmer’s character, Father Fintan, is depicted as a spiritual figure in this narrative. His performance is created using archival footage, family materials, and later-life recordings.

      His voice has been artificially reconstructed, similar to the technology employed after his tracheostomy, including his return as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun: Maverick.

      The production spanned six years, facing delays due to COVID and budget constraints. At one point, Kilmer’s scenes were completely omitted before the team recognized the film was lacking without him. This realization brought them back to generative AI as a solution.
