Spotify is set to allow users to purchase physical books directly through the app.
Spotify's latest advancement beyond audiobooks
Spotify is venturing beyond music streaming and audiobooks by integrating physical books into its app. The company has revealed a partnership with Bookshop.org that enables users to purchase physical books directly through Spotify this spring. This initiative is part of Spotify's efforts to provide users with additional ways to discover and enjoy stories, merging reading and listening in one platform.
The collaboration with Bookshop.org links Spotify to a network of independent bookstores, allowing users in the US and UK to buy both hardcovers and paperbacks without leaving the Spotify app.
Details on the Bookshop partnership
Bookshop.org will manage pricing, inventory, and order fulfillment, while customers will be directed to the retailer to finalize their purchases. Recognizing that physical books still hold a significant place in reading habits, Spotify views this collaboration as a means to support readers and local bookstores while broadening the audience for authors.
This partnership complements Spotify's expanding audiobook segment, which was launched in 2022 and has since spread to over 22 international markets with many thousands of English-language titles.
By incorporating physical books into its platform, Spotify intends to facilitate a smoother transition for readers from discovering a book in the app to owning a printed edition. Andy Hunter, the founder and CEO of Bookshop.org, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its potential to enhance support for independent booksellers by engaging readers where they already spend their time.
For a company primarily recognized for music streaming, this initiative signifies a significant pivot towards becoming a comprehensive destination for both audio and reading content. In addition to the Bookshop partnership, Spotify has also introduced its new Page Match feature, which allows readers to synchronize audiobooks with physical books. Just recently, the streaming service launched offline lyrics with translation capabilities as part of an extensive set of product updates.
Spotify's new Page Match feature for syncing audiobooks with physical books
Spotify has introduced a feature called Page Match that enables readers to effortlessly transition between a physical book or ebook and its audiobook. This feature enhances the existing audiobook Recaps function, which offers a brief audio summary to help users resume from where they last paused.
Page Match addresses a common annoyance for readers who enjoy switching formats but often lose track of the last page they read. Now, you can take a book, scan a page, and Spotify will guide you directly to the corresponding moment in the audiobook.
