Spotify aims for your friends to be aware of precisely what you're currently listening to.

Spotify is introducing new social features aimed at making your listening experience more visible, interactive, and, for better or worse, less private. The features, known as Listening Activity and Request to Jam, are gradually being made available to Android and iOS users in the United States, with wider accessibility expected by February 2026.

Of the two, Listening Activity appears to be the most significant change to the platform in some time. It enables you to see what your friends are currently listening to in real time, directly within the Spotify app. The feature displays the exact song, artist, and playback status of the music your friends are streaming.

Spotify transforms private listening into a communal experience.

Conversely, it also reveals all your music track names to your Spotify friends, meaning your late-night guilty pleasures and uniquely specific playlists are no longer hidden. Friends can either jump directly into the track you're playing or save it for later listening.

Fortunately, this feature is optional; you need to activate it in Settings > Privacy and social, then toggle the "Listening activity" switch. Additionally, you can still stream music in private mode, which prevents your track or artist choices from being shared with your friends on Spotify.

Similar to social media platforms, you can manage who can view your listening activity on Spotify, as not everyone needs to know what you’re listening to when you're by yourself. Lastly, the feature will be accessible to all users who have Messages enabled.

As for the "Request to Jam" feature, it allows Spotify Premium users to invite their friends, who also need to be paid users, to participate in a shared Jam session via the in-app messaging service. Friends can request songs to be added to the queue without having to be in the same location, and they can also control playback.

If you've ever inquired about a song that a friend mentioned before or posted on social media, Spotify's Listening Activity eliminates the uncertainty. Social listeners, including college friends, can engage on the app and add their favorite songs to the queue.
