OnePlus is preparing a new feature to ensure you never misplace your earbuds.

      OnePlus may finally address one of the most frustrating aspects of wireless earbuds. Reports indicate that the company is developing a new feature that will alert you when an earbud slips from your ear, which could help prevent it from being lost when you're not focused.

      Android Authority discovered the forthcoming feature, termed “Earbud fall detection,” while examining the latest version of OnePlus’ Hey Melody companion app (version 116.3.0). A screenshot from its settings page indicates that the feature will emit a sound from both earbuds when it detects that one has fallen out. It will also send a notification to assist in locating it.

      While the settings page does not provide detailed information about how Earbud fall detection operates, it is likely to utilize the same sensors that enable in-ear detection, which automatically starts or pauses music when you insert or remove your earbuds. However, it's unclear how the feature will distinguish between an unintentional drop and a user deliberately removing an earbud.

      It is suggested that OnePlus may employ a mix of sensor data and software algorithms to identify whether an earbud has fallen out by accident or has been intentionally taken out. The company is expected to clarify the mechanics of the feature when it becomes available.

      Release timing and compatibility remain uncertain

      At this time, there is no official update from OnePlus regarding the feature or its availability for users. The app does not specify compatibility details, so it's unknown if Earbud fall detection will be accessible on all earbuds or exclusively for OnePlus’ flagship models. Nevertheless, it is encouraging to see OnePlus finally addressing a concern shared by many wireless earbud users.
