The company has also extended support until May 6.
Bose is known for producing high-quality speakers, but they come at a significant cost. When the company announced its intention to discontinue support for its SoundTouch models and eliminate key features last year, many users were understandably frustrated. In response to the growing backlash, Bose has provided an update that offers some relief.
As reported by Bloomberg, Bose informed affected users via email that its SoundTouch devices will lose cloud connectivity on May 6, rather than the previously stated February 18. After this new deadline, the speakers will still function with local sources and will maintain access to features like Spotify Connect and Apple AirPlay.
Originally, Bose intended to remove all of this functionality and retire its companion app. However, in its most recent announcement, the company disclosed that it will automatically update the SoundTouch app on May 6 “to a version that supports the functions that can operate locally without the cloud.” The app will continue to be available for download in all regions until further notice.
This new version will enable users to stream music from their favorite apps via Bluetooth, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, and AUX. It will also support setup and configuration, remote control functions, and speaker grouping. However, after the update, the preset buttons on the speakers will no longer be functional, and users will not be able to browse or play music directly from the SoundTouch app.
SoundTouch speakers receive a new opportunity for use
Bose indicates that SoundTouch products will not receive security or software updates after May 6 and advises users to operate them on a secure and private network. The company also suggests that users update their speakers to the latest firmware version before the deadline, as system updates will not be available once cloud services are disabled.
Interestingly, Bose has also made its SoundTouch APIs open-source, enabling interested developers to create their own tools and features for compatible speakers, potentially prolonging their usability.
