Google Photos has simplified the process of editing multi-clip videos and making highlight reels.
Creating highlight videos that sync to the beat has become simpler than ever.
Google Photos is undergoing a significant update for video editing on both Android and iOS, featuring a revamped editing interface along with new tools designed to help users effortlessly create highlight reels, incorporate soundtracks, and add personalized text. According to Google, the revamped video editor is quicker and more user-friendly, offering a universal timeline that allows users to work with multiple clips simultaneously.
The editor offers instant access to editing tools through a carousel toolbar located underneath the timeline, enabling users to crop clips, apply filters, modify audio and playback speed, and insert text overlays. Google has also refined the interface in accordance with Android’s Material 3 Expressive design language, resulting in a more polished and contemporary appearance.

In addition to manual editing upgrades, Google has rolled out new templates in the Photos app that simplify the process of creating highlight videos using various photos and video clips. These templates come with pre-defined formats that include built-in music, text, and cuts synchronized to the soundtrack, allowing users to merely select photos or clips to produce shareable videos. Users can access these templates by navigating to the Create tab and selecting the new highlight video option.
Google Photos’ video editor now features a music library that enables users to easily incorporate soundtracks into their highlight videos, as well as the option to add custom text overlays. In its announcement, Google stated that the redesigned video editor will become the default editing tool on Android, reducing the necessity for users to seek out third-party video editing applications.
The updated editor is being rolled out on both Android and iOS platforms and is expected to reach all users shortly. Currently, the highlight video feature and custom text overlays are being launched for Google Photos on Android, with no announcement yet regarding when these features will be available for iPhone users.
