Your ChatGPT discussions might not remain free of ads for much longer.
Sponsored suggestions may soon become a part of your regular prompts.
What’s going on? If you use ChatGPT, be aware that advertisements might soon make an appearance in your chats. A recent code leak by computer engineer Tibor Blaho on X, as reported by Bleeping Computer, suggests that OpenAI is gearing up to introduce ads in ChatGPT.
The leaked code from the Android beta application includes mentions of an “ads feature,” “search ad,” and a “search ads carousel.”
This advertising feature appears to be connected to specific types of “searchable queries,” indicating that not all conversations will display ads.
Why does this matter? Although ChatGPT's growth has been impressive, achieving profitability has been challenging. Despite having a substantial user base, OpenAI has yet to turn a profit due to the high costs associated with operating and maintaining the AI infrastructure. This situation seems to be driving the company to explore additional revenue sources beyond ChatGPT subscriptions.
Ads could assist in covering computing and operational expenses while maintaining a free service tier, but this might alter the user experience for many. The downside for users is that what once felt like a clean, ad-free assistant could start resembling a search engine filled with sponsored links, subtle marketing, and the potential for recommendations to favor pay-over-helpfulness.
Why is this important to you? If ads start showing up:
- Your AI chats might occasionally feature sponsored links or suggestions.
- Certain “search-like” inquiries could prompt ad-style results before providing useful information.
- Some discussions may seem less natural, particularly if the advertising context is not apparent.
- The AI might leverage your query history or context to serve personalized ads, which raises concerns regarding privacy and bias.
What's next? Currently, OpenAI has not officially confirmed these developments. The leak indicates that the company is preparing its infrastructure. If OpenAI proceeds with this plan, users who prefer ad-free, distraction-free interactions may want to look into subscribing to alternative services.

I discovered how to turn an iPhone camera annoyance into a lifesaver for your photos.
If you're not a fan of Live Photos, that's understandable. But you could use it as a backup option for perfect pictures.
A decade ago, Apple rolled out a feature called Live Photos on the iPhone. Essentially, the camera captures a brief video of 1.5 seconds both before and after the shutter button is pressed. You can also enhance these live photos with looping, bouncing, and long exposure effects.
While this might sound appealing, it has also become a nuisance for many photography enthusiasts. For instance, it is enabled by default, and even if you turn it off in the camera viewfinder, it reactivates when you restart the camera app. The only way to completely disable it is by accessing the settings menu.
