TNW Backstage explores brain-computer interfaces.
TNW Backstage returns this week to delve into one of the most intriguing realms of technology: brain-computer interfaces (BCIs).
The capabilities of these neural devices are rapidly evolving. They've been implanted in skulls and worn as headbands, capable of measuring concentration, treating Parkinson’s disease, and allowing paralyzed individuals to control computers using their minds.
Various research labs and tech companies are working on BCIs, but the attention has largely been focused on one firm: Elon Musk’s Neuralink. This startup has successfully placed brain implants in monkeys, enabling them to play Pong with their thoughts. Musk also has ambitious plans for humans, including granting us "superpowers" and the ability to download our memories.
However, not everyone is enthusiastic about the prospect of Musk overseeing their brain functions. Fortunately, alternative options exist, including one from the Dutch healthtech company MindAffect.
MindAffect primarily utilizes BCIs for auditory and visual assessments. Worn as headbands, their devices examine the brain's reactions to stimuli, revealing what users saw or heard. This method is entirely non-invasive, cost-effective, and needs minimal staff involvement.
MindAffect's CEO, Jennifer Goodall, shares insights about the system in this week's episode of TNW Backstage. We revisit her presentation from the TNW Conference 2024 and discuss the healthtech trends that are influencing this year's event. You can listen to the episode on Spotify, visit our dedicated website, or use the media player at the end of this article.
When you're finished, take a look at our earlier podcast episodes, which provide a behind-the-scenes view of TNW Conference and the technology shaping our world.
In our inaugural show, we examined the landscape of data security and Meta's contentious “pay or consent” model with Ron de Jesus, the world's first Field Chief Privacy Officer. Our second episode featured comedy content creator Derek Mitchell and TNW co-founder Boris discussing the importance of humor in tech companies.
To commemorate the podcast's launch, we're also providing an exclusive discount on tickets for TNW Conference, happening in Amsterdam on June 19 and 20. You can find this offer hidden in each episode of TNW Backstage.
Thank you for reading—and now, for listening as well.
