Move over, Wordle: The New York Times has a new puzzle game.

The New York Times has launched a new addition to its Games catalog following the ongoing success of Wordle—and this one focuses on math. Digits challenges players to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with numbers. You can test the beta version for free online right now.

In Digits, participants are given a target number to match. They receive six numbers and have to manipulate them through mathematical operations to get as close to the target as possible. Not all numbers need to be used, so this game will truly test your math skills as you combine figures and create the right equations to approach the target number as closely as you can.

Players will earn a five-star rating for hitting the target exactly, a three-star rating for being within 10, and a one-star rating for reaching within 25 of the target. Currently, players also have access to five different puzzles with progressively larger numbers. I completed today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable math-based game that should appeal to curious minds who appreciate puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times titles like Wordle and Spelling Bee.

In an article introducing Digits and explaining The New York Times Games team's development approach, the Times stated that the team would use this free beta to fix bugs and evaluate whether it warrants further active development, where coding and design finalization will occur. So make sure to play Digits while it’s available, as The New York Times may discontinue the project if it doesn't receive the anticipated feedback.

Digits' beta can now be played for free on The New York Times Games website.

Wordle’s extraordinary year: New York Times reflects on the phenomenon’s significant 2022.

If you logged onto Twitter exactly one year ago, you likely remember when your feed became inundated with gray, yellow, and green boxes. Though it first launched in 2021 and gained mainstream traction in December of that year, Wordle transformed into an undeniable cultural sensation in early 2022, becoming ubiquitous unless muted. It marked a rare success story in gaming, appealing to a vast audience due to its simple design.

Wordle’s rise was as rapid as its user growth. In late January 2022, the New York Times announced the acquisition of the puzzle game from its creator Josh Wardle for an undisclosed low-seven-figure sum, a surprising move that nearly overshadowed Sony's announcement of acquiring Destiny
