Netflix is capitalizing on the current trend for video game adaptations by commissioning a movie based on Gears of War. The streaming platform is in talks with a former stuntman-turned-director to lead the action-packed film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Leitch is in negotiations to direct Gears of War for Netflix. Jon Spaihts, who received an Academy Award nomination for co-writing Dune, will write the screenplay for the adaptation.

Leitch, alongside his wife and creative collaborator Kelly McCormick, will produce the Netflix project through their production company, 87 North. The streaming service will collaborate with The Coalition Studio, a Canadian video game developer, to create the film adaptation.

Netflix obtained the rights to Gears of War in 2022 and aims to produce a major adaptation of the video game before venturing into other formats, including an adult animated series.

Released in 2006, Gears of War is a third-person shooter game set on the fictional planet Sera, resembling Earth. As humanity teeters on the edge of extinction, they fight against ruthless underground creatures referred to as the Locust Horde. The story centers on soldiers Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago from Delta Squad as they strive to save humanity from the Locust threat.

Gears of War rapidly became the fastest-selling video game of 2006 and is recognized as one of the leading franchises for the Xbox 360. There are eight games in the Gears of War series, encompassing the main titles, spin-offs, and prequels.

Leitch began his journey in the industry as a stunt performer, including doubling for Brad Pitt and contributing to two Matrix films. After serving as an uncredited co-director on John Wick, he directed his debut feature, Atomic Blonde, in 2017.

Since his work on Atomic Blonde, Leitch has established himself as a dependable action director known for exceptional stunt choreography. His filmography includes Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, Bullet Train, and The Fall Guy. His upcoming project is How to Rob a Bank, a crime thriller set for release in 2026, starring Nicolas Hoult, Pete Davidson, and Anna Sawai.
