HBO could potentially have the year's standout show from the creator of Mare of Easttown.
**Task | Official Teaser | HBO Max**
HBO has released the initial teaser trailer for Task, an upcoming crime drama created by Brad Ingelsby, known for Mare of Easttown. Even if the episodes only match the quality of this teaser, HBO could have a strong contender for show of the year.
Located in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Task features Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent assigned to investigate a series of violent robberies. Ruffalo’s character leads a novice task force aimed at tracking down the perpetrators.
The teaser indicates that Tom Pelphrey portrays the criminal mastermind, an unsuspecting family man who dons a skull mask during the heists. Based on the footage, it appears that the paths of the lawman and the outlaw are destined to clash, resulting in bloodshed.
The cast of Task includes Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton.

Brad Ingelsby serves as the creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer of Task. The episodes will be directed by executive producers Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Other executive producers include Ruffalo, Mark Roybal, Paul Lee, David Crockett, and Ron Schmidt, with Nicole Jordan-Webber and Jeremy Yaches acting as co-executive producers.
Task marks Ingelsby’s first television project since the acclaimed Mare of Easttown in 2021, which starred Kate Winslet, Julianne Nicholson, Evan Peters, and Jean Smart and received 16 Emmy nominations, winning four, including Outstanding Lead Actress for Winslet, Outstanding Supporting Actress for Nicholson, and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Peters.
If critics respond positively to Task, it could emerge as a key contender at the 2026 Emmys.
The series is set to premiere this September on HBO and will be available for streaming on HBO Max. Task consists of seven episodes, with new episodes releasing weekly.
