The reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has cast Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the lead. Armstrong will star alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is set to executive produce and reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers.

Gellar revealed the news to Armstrong in a video shared on her Instagram.

“How do you feel about helping me save the world?” Gellar asked. “Would you like to be my chosen one?” Overcome with emotion, Armstrong shed tears of joy and expressed gratitude to Gellar for “trusting” her with this role.

“From the very first moment I watched Ryan’s audition, I knew she was the one I wanted by my side,” Gellar wrote in the caption. “Having such emotional intelligence and talent at such a young age is truly a gift. The added bonus is that her smile can brighten even the darkest room.”

Armstrong is recognized for her role as Fern in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and as Charlie McGee in the Firestarter remake. She will soon appear in a guest role on Stick, Owen Wilson’s Apple TV+ golf comedy. In the upcoming months, Armstrong will appear alongside Ethan Hawke in FX's The Lowdown, a new series from Sterlin Harjo of Reservation Dogs.

The Buffy reboot received a pilot order from Hulu in February. The showrunners for Poker Face season 1, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, will write, showrun, and executive produce the untitled reboot.

“We are incredibly excited to have discovered this generation’s Slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong; she completely impressed us — there is no doubt she is the chosen one,” the Zuckermans said in a statement.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao will executive produce and direct the pilot. Details about the plot remain under wraps. Armstrong's character is expected to be a high school student. This new chapter in the Buffyverse is being produced by 20th Television and Searchlight TV.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003. You can stream the entire series on Hulu or Disney+.
