Yesterday, reports emerged that over 89 million Steam accounts were being sold on the dark web, prompting users to quickly change their passwords. Steam has declared this information to be inaccurate and reassured users that their accounts are safe. While there was indeed a leak, it did not jeopardize the security of anyone's PC game library.

Steam clarified that although a leak occurred, it did not involve a breach of their systems. “We are still investigating the source of the leak, complicated by the fact that SMS messages are unencrypted during transmission and pass through multiple providers before reaching your device,” the announcement stated.

“The leak involved older text messages containing one-time codes that were only valid for 15 minutes, along with the phone numbers to which they were sent. The leaked information did not link phone numbers to any Steam accounts, passwords, payment details, or other personal information. Old text messages cannot be utilized to compromise your Steam account's security, and whenever a code is employed to change your Steam email or password via SMS, a confirmation will be sent to you through email and/or Steam secure messages.”

This confirmation indicates that the worst-case scenario is receiving spam texts due to the phone number leak. Since the security codes have a short validity period of 15 minutes, they quickly become outdated and ineffective. Valve has stated there is no need for users to change their passwords at this time, though they advise treating any unsolicited account security messages with caution.

Although this incident may have turned out to be a false alarm, it serves as a reminder that cybersecurity is a constantly evolving domain. It's essential to select strong, secure passwords or utilize a password manager. For many gamers, their Steam library signifies hundreds or even thousands of hours of gameplay, something that should not be put in jeopardy.
