The prequel to Game of Thrones, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been postponed until 2026.

      HBO

One of the motivations for simultaneously producing two distinct Game of Thrones prequels was to maintain the franchise's presence on HBO and Max during the lengthy gaps between seasons. However, the upcoming prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will now bypass 2025 entirely. This could mean that both House of the Dragon season 3 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms might be released in the same year.

According to Variety, HBO confirmed this delay when it presented a trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms during its upfront event. The trailer concluded with a vague release window set for 2026, but HBO CEO Casey Bloys indicated it would likely premiere in winter 2026. This timing suggests it could debut on HBO and Max in either January or February of 2026. HBO has not announced when House of the Dragon will return. If season 3 does not launch in 2026, delaying it to 2027 would result in an almost three-year gap between seasons. Currently, House of the Dragon season 3 is in production.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set just a century before Game of Thrones and is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. The narrative follows a poor knight, Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), who forms a friendship with Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), a young boy revealed to be one of the Targaryen heirs to the Iron Throne. Several members of Egg’s family will feature in the series, including Prince Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennett), Prince Baelor Targaryen (Bertie Carvel), and Prince Maekar Targaryen (Sam Spruell).

Similar to the Song of Ice and Fire novels, Martin has not yet documented all of Dunk and Egg’s adventures, though he has alluded to their ultimate futures beyond their time together. His forthcoming novel, The Winds of Winter, remains unfinished, and there’s currently no update on when or if it will be completed.

5 questions we have before the season 2 finale of House of the Dragon

It may feel like just yesterday when HBO's House of the Dragon returned from its two-year hiatus, but the second season is nearing its conclusion. Only one episode remains this season, and for perhaps the first time, it appears that Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) might actually have the upper hand against her adversaries. Viewers will need to wait to see how long Rhaenyra can maintain her current advantage, but with her forces finally gathered in the Riverlands and at least seven dragons and riders at her command, the Black Queen has an unprecedented opportunity to impact the Dance of Dragons.

There are still several mysteries that need resolution in House of the Dragon's upcoming season 2 finale to clarify the current political landscape of Westeros. Book readers will recognize that the Game of Thrones prequel has the potential to conclude its second season with shocking and explosive moments, should it choose to do so.

House of the Dragon has finally fulfilled its biggest promises

Warning: This article contains significant spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 4.

HBO's House of the Dragon has taken its time to reach the intense, explosive drama at the heart of its narrative. The first season of the Game of Thrones prequel largely served as a prelude, which ended with the shocking demise of a character who had a greater significance to the show's main character, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), than to the audience. In subsequent episodes, House of the Dragon has similarly bid farewell to several supporting characters in often brutally shocking ways. Throughout this time, it has endeavored to make viewers feel the gradual buildup of tension that has taken nearly 14 hours of television to ignite.

House of the Dragon's latest episode hints at a significant battle

In the most recent episode of HBO's House of the Dragon, Daemon Targaryen's (Matt Smith) capture of Harrenhal does not unfold as he anticipated. Though he successfully takes the castle, there is little excitement surrounding his conquest. Upon arriving at the cursed fortress on his dragon, Caraxes, he discovers it mostly deserted, save for a few workers and its castellan, Lord Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale), who promptly surrenders Harrenhal to Daemon without resistance.

While still at Harrenhal, Daemon encounters a disturbing vision. Lured to a fire-lit room by the distant sound of a woman humming, Daemon eventually comes face to face with a younger version of Rhaenyra (season 1 star Milly Alcock). “Always coming and going, aren’t you? And I
