Step aside, Wordle: The New York Times has a fresh puzzle game.

The New York Times has launched a new addition to its Games catalog following the ongoing success of Wordle, and this one focuses on math. Digits challenges players to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with numbers. You can play its beta version for free online right now.

In Digits, players receive a target number they must match. They are given six numbers to manipulate through various operations to get as close to the target as possible. Not every number has to be used, making this game a test of your math skills as you combine numbers and formulate equations to reach the target number.

Players will earn a five-star rating for an exact match with the target number, a three-star rating if they are within 10 of it, and a one-star rating if they get within 25. Currently, players also have access to five different puzzles that feature increasingly larger numbers. I completed today's puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-based experience that should attract fans of puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times titles such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.

In an article revealing Digits and describing the development process by The New York Times Games team, it is mentioned that the team will use this free beta to identify bugs and determine if it’s worthwhile to advance to a more active development stage "where the game is coded and designs finalized." So enjoy Digits while you can, as The New York Times may decide to discontinue it if the response isn’t up to their expectations.

Digits' beta is currently available to play for free on The New York Times Games website.

If you logged onto Twitter exactly a year ago, you likely remember when your feed started filling up with gray, yellow, and green boxes. Though it began in 2021 and gained mainstream traction that December, Wordle rapidly became a cultural sensation in early 2022 that was almost impossible to avoid outside of a muted word list. It’s a rare success story in gaming, one that reached a wide audience due to its elegant simplicity.

Wordle’s popularity surged alongside its user base. In late January 2022, the New York Times announced it had purchased the puzzle game from creator Josh Wardle in a low-seven-figure deal -- a surprising move that almost overshadowed Sony’s earlier announcement about acquiring Destiny 2 developer Bungie. This acquisition sparked concerns among fans
