No expert would have anticipated that Suits would emerge as the most-streamed TV show in the U.S. for 2023. NBC’s decision to commission a spinoff titled Suits LA appeared to be a sure thing. Regrettably for fans of the legal series, Suits LA will only have a single season as NBC has decided to cancel it.
The choice to terminate Suits LA came just before the season finale scheduled for May 18. NBC aimed to take advantage of Suits’ recent surge in popularity, but the spinoff received poor reviews and struggled to maintain strong TV ratings.
Jeff Bader, NBC’s president of programming strategy, commented on the unexpected decision to cancel Suits LA over the weekend.
“It’s very challenging to decide which shows to bring back,” Bader stated during a conference call (via Deadline). “Suits [LA] had a very brief run, but it has not connected with audiences in the way we anticipated. There are many possible reasons—people have been speculating on why it hasn’t resonated, but it’s simply not indicating any potential for future growth, unfortunately.”
Suits LA was not the only show to be canceled by NBC. The network also axed Lopez vs. Lopez, Found, Night Court, and The Irrational. Bader mentioned that his team evaluates the shows' performance on both “linear and digital” platforms to identify which ones are “growing.”
“We had to make some difficult choices,” Bader added.
Developed by Suits creator Aaron Korsh, Suits LA featured Stephen Amell as a former New York prosecutor who relocates to Los Angeles to establish a law firm focused on entertainment law. The cast included Lex Scott Davis as Erica Rollins, Josh McDermitt as Stuart Lane, and Bryan Greenberg as Rick Dodsen.
Several popular characters from the original series made appearances in the spinoff, including Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter and Rick Hoffman as Louis Litt.
Suits ran for nine seasons on USA Network from 2011 to 2019. According to Nielsen, Suits amassed a record-breaking 57.7 billion total viewing minutes in 2023.
Suits LA will have its series finale on NBC at 9 p.m. ET/PT on May 18. All available episodes can be streamed on Peacock.
