If the upcoming remaster of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 + 4 has you eager to see more classic skateboarding games, you're not the only one: the legend himself has expressed his "aspirations" for seeing other titles, like Tony Hawk’s Underground, remastered for contemporary consoles, though the ultimate choice lies outside his hands.

In a conversation with Screen Rant at THPS Fest, when asked about his desire for additional remasters, Hawk replied in his characteristic modesty: “I always have aspirations. It's generally not my decision. I'll advocate as much as I can, but I'm collaborating with a much larger company that possesses greater knowledge than I do.” He added that there have been no discussions regarding a remaster of Tony Hawk’s Underground, but the performance of THPS 3 + 4 could impact the release of upcoming titles.

The remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 debuted in 2020, and THPS 3 + 4 was said to have been canceled in 2022 following Vicarious Vision’s merger with Blizzard. It has since been revived, with a release date set for July 11, indicating that the future of the franchise remains uncertain. According to the interview with Screen Rant, decisions regarding THPS remasters are made on a case-by-case basis. A successful release of THPS 3 + 4 could make the remaster of Underground more probable, though there are no guarantees.

While the two current remasters essentially focus on straightforward skating gameplay, Underground took a unique path by introducing a career mode that enabled players to assume the role of a custom skater and enhance their fame through competitions. In that sense, the game is more of an adventure title than a traditional skating simulator, yet it retains the core essence of a Tony Hawk game.

Currently, the gaming landscape lacks a variety of skating games. The Tony Hawk series remains the most prominent, although EA’s Skate franchise is anticipated to have a new release in 2025. Aside from these, the available options are mostly limited to smaller titles like OlliOlli World or the unconventional Skatebird.

Activision has recognized the request for more Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater

On September 29, the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series celebrates its 25th anniversary. First launched in 1999 for the original PlayStation, the Pro Skater games have left a lasting impact on both the video game industry and skateboarding culture. They not only established a durable series for Activision but also helped popularize extreme sports games, paved the way for licensed music's inclusion in gaming, and introduced skating culture to an entire generation. Over the past 25 years, the series has experienced many highs and lows, with the latest release being 2020's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, a remastered version of the franchise's first two games.

Since then, there has been little news regarding Pro Skater, apart from a cameo in Astro Bot, but Activision is taking the opportunity of its 25th anniversary to assure fans that it appreciates the significance of the series. In an exclusive interview with Digital Trends, Activision’s Chief Operating Officer Josh Taub stated that the company has "heard the demand" for more Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and still regards the series as one of its essential core franchises in 2024.
