We are just a week away from Samsung's announcement of the newest member of its Galaxy S25 series, and leaks regarding the specifications and images of the Galaxy S25 Edge are already circulating. With a thickness of 5.8 mm, it is anticipated to be the world's thinnest modern smartphone, and it is expected to include a dual camera system featuring a 200MP main telephoto lens.

Samsung is likely to provide more information during its keynote presentation next Monday; however, like the finest folding phones, a slim or foldable display typically poses durability challenges. Today, Samsung unveiled a solution for this issue, stating that the Galaxy S25 Edge will be the first smartphone to incorporate the new Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2.

Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 replaces the original Ceramic, which has safeguarded screens on leading smartphones for the past year and has recently been introduced in flip phones like the new Motorola Razr Ultra 2025. Samsung EVP and Head of Mechanical R&D for Mobile, Kwangjin Bae, mentioned:

"The Galaxy S25 Edge will establish a new benchmark for craftsmanship and performance, being our slimmest Galaxy S series device to date. To support this innovative design, it was crucial to create a display material that is both exceptionally thin and reliably durable."

Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 improves durability and crack resistance in the upcoming generation of ultra-thin smartphones, such as Apple’s anticipated iPhone 17 Air. It contains crystals integrated within the glass matrix, and Corning’s ion exchange process further enhances the strength and protection of the display cover.

Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 aims to pave the way for a future where smartphones can be thinner without sacrificing their structural integrity. Andrew Beck, Vice President and GM at Corning Gorilla Glass, stated:

"With Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, we have accomplished an impressive blend of thinness and strength, providing consumers with exceptional durability in a modern, sleek, and premium design."

The Galaxy S25 Edge is the first smartphone to showcase this new glass. Samsung and Corning have yet to disclose additional details about this enhanced protection or the extent of its impact on smartphone durability. However, as more devices are designed to be thinner, and with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 expected to be among the slimmest smartphones yet, it will be intriguing to see if this protection remains exclusive to Samsung.

What other features will Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 and the Galaxy S25 Edge offer? We will find out next week during Samsung's major announcement scheduled for 8 PM Eastern Time on May 12th.

Galaxy S25 Edge launch date leaks again, and it’s good news

After we missed the last possible announcement for the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, there is now a new date to anticipate. Samsung is reportedly set to host an Unpacked launch event on May 13, with pre-orders starting on May 24.

However, the initial launch will occur in South Korea and China, as reported by The Financial News, a South Korean news outlet that cited an anonymous industry source. The positive news is that the source also indicated that the Galaxy S25 Edge will be available in the U.S. and other global markets starting May 20.

The Galaxy S25 doesn’t seem to be the success that Samsung had anticipated

Samsung is leading Apple in smartphone shipment market share, according to data from Counterpoint Research, but a deeper analysis of two very different strategies suggests that Samsung might not be pleased with the current situation. In the first quarter of 2025, Samsung held 20% of the global smartphone market in terms of device shipments, while Apple followed closely with 19%. This reflects "sell in" data, meaning the number of devices purchased from the manufacturer by distributors. This marks a notable change from the last quarter of 2024, where Apple led with 23% of the market compared to Samsung's 16%.

This is important in understanding why Samsung might view the latest figures, which initially appear positive, with concern. By the end of 2024, Apple would have been enjoying the success of the iPhone 16 series, while Samsung would have been distanced from the Galaxy S24 series and the launches of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. It makes sense that Apple would dominate market share right after releasing its flagship devices for the year.

Samsung Galaxy S25 owners receive unexpected new features in recent update

The April 2025 security update for the Samsung Galaxy S25 series includes more enhancements than initially expected. According to SamMobile, this monthly update goes beyond merely addressing security vulnerabilities; it also reinstates a feature and improves others.
