Who would have thought? A senior Apple executive suggesting that in a decade, the iPhone — your cherished iPhone (unless you favor Android, of course) — might no longer exist.
Before you let the idea of Apple phasing out the iPhone in 10 years send you into a frenzy, we should also consider that by 2035, there could very well be an iPhone 27, or whatever name Apple decides on by that time.
So, what prompted Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, to make such an unexpected statement?
Cue shared his thoughts on this matter during the Google Search antitrust remedies trial on Wednesday, discussing how artificial intelligence (AI) could potentially transform the technology landscape.
The executive remarked that technology is evolving at such a rapid pace that it’s plausible for consumers to be using completely different devices in the near future.
“You may not need an iPhone 10 years from now, as implausible as it sounds,” Cue stated in widely reported comments, adding: “True competition arises during technological shifts. These shifts create opportunities. AI is a new technology shift, generating new possibilities for new players.”
Essentially, Cue suggested that as AI advances, alternative types of devices or interfaces — like wearables, mixed reality headsets, or ambient AI assistants — from emerging industry competitors could replace smartphones as our primary means of engaging with technology.
His remarks indicate Apple’s understanding that no product, not even the iPhone, is exempt from the possibility of being replaced by new innovations propelled by transformative technology like AI.
But could Apple genuinely phase out the iPhone? Remember the debut of the iPod in 2001, which was once regarded as the ultimate solution for portable music? Apple eventually discontinued it as new technology led to the birth of the iPhone, though there was a crossover phase.
Since the iPhone's launch in 2007, Apple has sold over 2.6 billion units worldwide, and the total revenue from its most successful product has surpassed an astonishing $1.5 trillion. Given this, it’s difficult to envision Apple declaring the iPhone’s end. However, as we cannot predict future technological advancements, it remains a possibility. Stay tuned.

iPhone prices are rising, but not for the reason you think
The average selling price of iPhones is increasing, but it isn't solely due to what you might assume. Recent data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) indicates that the average price of an iPhone has risen by $18 to $971, up from $953 in the fourth quarter of 2024. While many may quickly attribute this to tariffs, the influence of economic factors remains unclear. The current trend towards higher-priced iPhones is mainly a result of Apple's decision to discontinue the iPhone SE and iPhone 14 models. Analysts leverage metrics like the U.S. Weighted Average Retail Price (US-WARP) to assess the average sale price since Apple ceased publicly reporting these figures at the end of 2018.

The iPhone 17 could feature a substantial RAM upgrade
We anticipated the iPhone 17 to be a significant upgrade, but a new rumor suggests it may surpass initial expectations in terms of technical improvements. According to a reputable source, Digital Chat Station, the entire lineup will utilize Apple Intelligence on a "large scale," and every model, from the base iPhone 17 to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, is expected to have 12GB of RAM. This rumor aligns with earlier comments from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, adding to its credibility. Given that current iPhones are limited to 8GB of RAM, this indicates a 33% increase — a noteworthy enhancement. Digital Chat Station also indicated that the phones will be powered by the TSMC A19 Pro chip, the most powerful processor in an iPhone to date. Together, these developments suggest that the iPhone 17 series will likely be significantly faster than current versions.
