Throughout testing, the team utilized camera captures to determine the most comfortable grip, button arrangement, and texture. The revised thumbsticks underwent multiple precise adjustments for optimal performance.

All the design and engineering efforts are evident during use. I've tried nearly half a dozen game controllers recently, including those with telescoping bars like the Pro. The Backbone controller distinguishes itself with its excellent build quality and balanced weight.
A notable feature of the Pro model is the dotted texture on the handle. While it isn't rubberized, it still provides a commendable grip. Khaira mentioned that multiple laser-etched textures were tested to ensure comfort without a rough feel or causing sweaty palms.

While playing Grid Legends in a humid 98 degrees Fahrenheit, the Backbone Pro maintained a firm grip despite my sweaty hands. The handles are thicker this time, a personal advantage for me as I’m accustomed to the official Xbox controller, making the Backbone Pro feel familiar. The added weight enhances control, particularly when using gyro tilt in racing games.

The Backbone Pro also includes two customizable rear buttons. Located on the inner handle, these buttons provide satisfying clicks and are beneficial for games with complex controls. The telescopic bar easily accommodates all smartphones, including larger models like the iPhone 16 Pro Max and Red Magic 10 Pro, and almost fits the iPad mini. Importantly, the controller can be used without removing the phone's case.

With the increase in size and weight, the Backbone Pro also introduced significant functional enhancements. Beyond its USB-C tethered mode, it can function as a wireless controller for various devices, including TVs, tablets, and laptops.
I spent significant time using the controller in wireless mode, enjoying games like Warframe, Alien: Isolation, and the latest Resident Evil titles. I experienced no latency issues, and pairing it with various screens was straightforward.

This versatility contributes to a seamless gaming experience. For instance, if you pause a game on a larger screen, you can continue on a mobile device using the official streaming client, such as Xbox Cloud. “We aim to support every platform,” Khaira stated during a live demonstration of the Backbone Pro.

In wireless mode, the built-in battery is claimed to last 40 hours. I didn’t test this claim, and you probably shouldn’t worry about it either, given that the controllers permit simultaneous charging via the USB-C port on the right handle. When plugged in, it charges both the phone and the controller's battery. I didn't run out of power during my gaming sessions, and the companion app conveniently displays the battery levels for both devices.
