The Owens sisters are set to enchant audiences once again next year. Warner Bros. has announced that the sequel to Practical Magic will be released in theaters on September 18, 2026. Original stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman will reprise their roles for this continuation.
In a social media post regarding the release date for Practical Magic 2, Bullock and Kidman stated, “Tooth of wolf and morning dew, something old and something new. Let the spell begin to mix. September 18, 2026.”
Susanne Bier, who previously collaborated with Bullock on Bird Box, will direct the sequel, working from a screenplay by the original writing team of Akiva Goldsman, Adam Brooks, and Robin Swicord. Bullock, Kidman, and Denise DiNovi will serve as producers. Details about the plot for the sequel remain confidential.

Directed by Griffin Dunne, the original Practical Magic follows sisters Sally and Gilly Owens (played by Bullock and Kidman), who come from a long line of witches and lost their parents due to a family curse. Raised by their aunts in a small town, Sally and Gilly discover that a curse prevents them from finding love. When the spirit of Gilly's abusive boyfriend puts their lives at risk, the sisters must unite and use their magical powers to break the curse.
Practical Magic premiered in theaters on October 16, 1998. Despite the star power of its leads, the film was not a box office success, earning $46 million worldwide against a $75 million budget. However, it has since gained a cult following.
Practical Magic 2 will be another challenge for legacy sequels and established intellectual property. Are audiences interested in revisiting characters from before the 21st century? A notable success in this area is Top Gun: Maverick, which leveraged Tom Cruise's star power and his beloved character to create a distinguished sequel in the franchise.
On the other hand, not all legacy sequels are successful. For instance, 2024's The Crow flopped at the box office, 2024's Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire failed to revive the franchise, and 2023's The Exorcist: Believer led to the cancellation of a planned trilogy.
Practical Magic 2 will face significant competition at the box office from Sony, as Zach Cregger's Resident Evil is also set for release on September 18.
