Sony's upcoming flagship headphones may address a major user concern.

Our favorite headphones, the Sony WH-1000XM5, are anticipated to have a successor. Ahead of a possible launch on May 15, specifications for the Sony WH-1000XM6 have surfaced, revealing a mix of news.

A now-removed Amazon Spain listing (reported by The Walkman Blog) indicates that the WH-1000XM6 will likely come equipped with a new QN3 chip, 30mm drivers, 12 noise-canceling microphones, and AI-enhanced voice microphones. Additionally, it will showcase a foldable design, a revamped headband, and software ear cushions for enhanced comfort. A new carrying case is also expected to accompany the headphones.

Sony's choice to reintroduce a foldable design in the upcoming XM series headphones would be noteworthy, increasing their portability compared to more recent models.

Other anticipated features include up to 30 hours of battery life, quick charging, 360 Upmix for cinema, Game EQ, enhanced call quality, and multipoint connectivity.

The battery life for the WH-1000XM6 is projected to remain at 30 hours, with a fast-charging capability that allows for three hours of playback from just a three-minute charge.

Speculation suggests a price hike to approximately $479 for these headphones, with availability starting next month.

Now nearly three years old, the XM5 has consistently been praised for its outstanding sound quality, comfort, call quality, noise cancellation, and battery life. The headphones boast a sleek design, are lightweight, and feature user-friendly controls.

As highlighted in our review, the XM5s deliver detailed and balanced audio with well-managed bass. The noise cancellation is excellent, though it is slightly outperformed by Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. Call quality is remarkable, and the battery life is adequate for lengthy flights.

However, the headphones do not offer some modern features like spatial audio, USB Audio, and support for Auracast. We have consistently found the hinge connecting the headband to the earcups to be somewhat uncomfortable after prolonged use.

We will inform you as soon as the WH-1000XM6 is officially announced.
