Rian Johnson has a differing opinion from Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos regarding the notion that movie theaters are 'outdated.'

Though director Rian Johnson has collaborated with Netflix for two sequels to his successful 2019 film Knives Out, he doesn't see eye to eye with the company on every issue. While promoting the second season of Poker Face, Johnson mentioned to Business Insider that he disagrees with Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos' recent remarks about movie theaters.
In a recent interview, Sarandos claimed that the traditional theater model is "outdated" and that Netflix’s streaming approach is simply providing consumers with what they desire. In contrast, Johnson expressed his desire for his next Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man, to be shown in as many theaters as possible.
“Obviously I don’t [agree],” Johnson said when addressing Sarandos' statement. “I love movies. I love going to see movies. However, I feel that discussing this with Ted would be different than just one quote presented to me in this context. So, I'm not trying to frame this as if I'm having a proxy conversation with Ted right now.”
“I believe theatrical experiences aren't going anywhere,” Johnson asserted, pointing out recent successes like Sinners and A Minecraft Movie that have shown the viability of theatrical releases. “We've seen that if you screen a movie that people want to see in theaters, they will show up, and the experience of being in a packed theater is incredibly valuable. It’s something I cherish, and I want to see more of it in the world.”
Sarandos' initial remarks were made at the Time100 Summit, where he stated, “We’re in a period of transition. People grew up thinking, ‘I want to make movies on a gigantic screen and have strangers watch them [and to have them] play in theaters for two months, making audiences cry in sold-out shows.’ … It’s an outdated concept.”
