What we hope to see from the Google Pixel Watch 4
Has there ever been such a rapidly improved product as the Pixel Watch? Google’s initial effort was lacking, but the Pixel Watch 2 showed significant improvement, and the Pixel Watch 3 was genuinely excellent. Therefore, it's fair to say there are high expectations for the Pixel Watch 4. Will it stand out like the Pixel Watch 3? Or will Google revert to form and deliver another disappointment like the original Pixel Watch?
Here, you'll find the latest leaks and rumors regarding the Pixel Watch 4. Although there aren’t many available yet, we’ve also compiled a list of features we hope to see in the upcoming Pixel Watch.
Google Pixel Watch 4: Release and Price
Currently, there are no leaks concerning the release date or price. However, it’s reasonable to predict that the Pixel Watch 4 will debut in the fall of 2025. While a price increase isn't out of the realm of possibility, we haven't seen any indicators suggesting that Google will raise prices.
Google Pixel Watch 4: Design and Charging
There aren't many leaks about the Google Pixel Watch 4 just yet, but the available information hints that there won’t be significant changes for this fourth iteration. According to leaks from OnLeaks and 91Mobiles, the Pixel Watch 4 is expected to maintain the same iconic round design, though with slightly smaller bezels surrounding the display. The Pixel Watch 3 had already reduced the bulkier bezels from previous models, and it's commendable that Google is further minimizing them.
There are more substantial updates on the back, notably the absence of charging pins. While the four sensors remain positioned on the back, this omission may suggest that Google is transitioning to wireless charging for the Pixel Watch 4. This isn’t a massive shift, as similar charging methods have been implemented in the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7, but it is a positive enhancement.
Google Pixel Watch 4: What We Hope to See
The Pixel Watch 3 was a solid smartwatch, but certainly not flawless. Here’s a brief list of enhancements we would like to see in the Pixel Watch 4.
Extended Battery Life
The Pixel Watch 3 offered decent battery life by smartwatch standards, lasting approximately a day and a half on a single charge. However, there have been significantly better options on the market recently, especially with the OnePlus Watch 3, which can last multiple days on one charge—surpassing nearly all other smartwatches.
Could the Pixel Watch achieve similar performance? It’s possible it may not, but it highlights that smartwatches can and should aim for better battery efficiency. While the Pixel Watch 3 performed well in this regard, we’re hoping the Pixel Watch 4 will excel even further.
Fewer Features Behind the Fitbit Paywall
Google’s acquisition of Fitbit provided an established fitness platform for its smartwatches, and the Pixel Watch has become the premium option for accessing Fitbit’s excellent exercise and health tracking. However, it doesn’t feel very premium due to the ongoing subscription required for Fitbit's top features.
While the six months of free access to Fitbit Premium included with the purchase of the watch softens the blow, the expectation for premium features with a premium price tag makes it feel somewhat unfair to have to pay extra for those features. The Pixel Watch 4 should aim to drop the subscription model to maintain its status as a premium smartwatch.
Upgrade the Smaller Size
The Pixel Watch 3 did well by introducing a larger size option, which was fantastic. However, the 41mm size now needs reevaluation because it is, frankly, too small.
Previous Mobile Editor Joe Maring enjoyed the Pixel Watch 3 and had minimal criticisms of the device, but he did mention that even on his small wrists, the 41mm Pixel Watch 3 felt inadequate. The sleek and smooth design, which is iconic for the Google brand, tends to make a small watch seem even smaller, which is an issue for a watch that is already on the petite side. Apple offers its smallest Apple Watch Series 10 in a 42mm size, and it’s time for Google to do the same with the Pixel Watch 4.
Enhanced Durability or Repairability
The Pixel Watch 3 met standard durability expectations for smartwatches, including swim-ready water resistance, but it was notably prone to scratches, particularly on the back. Additionally, that model received poor feedback regarding repairability, as it was challenging to replace the back panel if it became scratched.
While this may not be a major flaw, it’s something we hope Google will address. A tougher back panel would greatly benefit the Pixel Watch 4, along with a commitment to improved repairability.
