Borderlands 4 is the most multiplayer-centric title in the series to date.
On Wednesday afternoon, PlayStation and Gearbox Software teased new content for Borderlands 4, revealing much more about the game than previously shown. This included new movement mechanics, two of the four playable Vault Hunters, and more. The initial segment of the video showcased a panther/tiger composed of phase energy in a distinctly cat-like stance, shortly before it pounced on an enemy and took off its head in true Borderlands style.
The 20-minute in-depth presentation provided players with insights into the new systems featured in the latest installment. Set on the planet Kairos, Randy Pitchford, founder of Gearbox Entertainment, described Borderlands 4 as having a “more grounded tone, pushing gameplay further than ever.” However, the game retains its over-the-top chaotic charm, complete with all the Psychos you could wish for.
Several beloved characters, such as Moxie, will be making a return. Players will have a drone companion named Echo 4, which assists in locating objectives. The game world is less linear compared to previous installments; although it isn't entirely open-world, it offers numerous side quests and secrets to uncover. Additionally, dynamic weather conditions and events will alter stages, allowing each playthrough to feel unique.
New movement capabilities include rapid dodging, sliding on the ground, and dashing across the battlefield. Players were shown grappling an explosive barrel before launching it at an enemy, reminiscent of mechanics from Halo Infinite.
The most significant enhancements involve the multiplayer aspect. Borderlands 4 will feature full cross-platform play upon release, enabling players to team up regardless of their system. There will also be split-screen multiplayer for those nostalgic for couch co-op gameplay, and this is just the beginning.
Each player can customize their campaign difficulty independently from others in the party. Details on how this functions weren't fully explained, but it allows new players to opt for an easier difficulty while experienced players can face tougher enemies. All loot is instanced, ensuring players won’t have to worry about others taking their drops. If you stray from your group, you can teleport to their location.
Borderlands 4 is designed for group play, though it can still be enjoyable solo. There are numerous other changes, such as ordinance weapons functioning more like abilities with a cooldown instead of occupying a weapon slot. The key takeaway is this: Borderlands 4 promises the same chaotic fun that fans have come to expect from the franchise.
A hands-on gameplay event is scheduled for June, and the full game is set to launch sooner than anticipated on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version expected later in the year.
