The phrase “Die Hard on an X” has become a well-known concept for films with similar storylines. For example, Die Hard on a plane translates to Air Force One, Die Hard on a ship is represented by Under Siege, and Die Hard on a bus refers to Speed. The newest iteration is Die Hard on a submarine, culminating in Subversion, an action film featuring Chris Hemsworth.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hemsworth is set to star in Subversion, a submarine thriller being produced by Amazon MGM Studios. Patrick Vollrath, recognized for his short film Everything Will Be Okay, will direct, with a script penned by Andrew Ferguson.
In line with the Die Hard theme, Subversion tells the story of a hopeful Naval commander (Hemsworth) who is coerced by a cartel-like group into piloting a perilous submarine laden with illegal cargo through international waters. As reported by THR, “Caught in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, he must outsmart blockades and confront dangers both inside and outside the submarine.”
Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce the film under his di Bonaventura Pictures label. Filming is expected to commence this fall in Australia.
Vollrath has prior experience directing films set on various modes of transportation. He made his debut feature as a director with 2019’s 7500, an action film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, which centers on a pilot trapped in the cockpit while terrorists hijack the airplane.
After achieving fame as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Hemsworth has maintained his status as a leading action star for over 15 years. He will reprise his role as the God of Thunder in Avengers: Doomsday.
Beyond Marvel, Hemsworth’s notable action role is as Tyler Rake in the Extraction series, helmed by stuntman-turned-director Sam Hargrave. The two Extraction films have been lauded for their stunning stunt choreography and innovative use of single-shot filming for complex action scenes.
Hemsworth is also set to appear in another project from Amazon MGM Studios, Crime 101, directed by Bart Layton. This crime thriller features Hemsworth alongside Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, and Halle Berry, and is scheduled for release in theaters in 2026.
