Google introduces Spanish and French to NotebookLM in a significant language update.
NotebookLM is one of Google’s lesser-known AI tools, but it has recently introduced a feature that is gaining traction — Audio Overviews. This feature has already been integrated into Gemini, with plans to bring it to Google Docs in the coming months. Until now, Audio Overviews was available only in English, but starting this week, it can be accessed in over 50 languages.
The NotebookLM platform focuses on compiling notebooks filled with information from various sources and interacting with them using LLMs. Essentially, Audio Overviews acts as an advanced summary tool, enabling users to generate audio summaries of selected sources, styled like a podcast with two AI hosts.
Although users could always utilize source material in any language to create an Overview, the audio feature was previously limited to English. Now, switching to languages such as Spanish, French, or any of the 50+ languages added this week is straightforward.
This update greatly facilitates the consumption of content without needing to find translations in your preferred language. For example, you can listen to an Audio Overview of a newly published Japanese research paper that hasn't been translated or delve into niche English content that's not available in Spanish. This feature retains its original purpose of summarizing and simplifying content, allowing you to grasp lengthy or complex material quickly and accessibly.
Since NotebookLM is largely marketed as a study aid, it's evident that this feature could also be beneficial for language learners. Engaging with familiar content in your target language is a highly effective method to improve comprehension skills.
For instance, it's quite common for learners to pick up the “Harry Potter” series in their target language, as the story is already well-known. Similarly, you can transform any written content you are familiar with into a podcast in your target language for listening practice. A new “Output Language” option has been introduced, allowing you to easily switch languages at any moment and create multilingual content.
Google’s announcement regarding this update specifically highlights NotebookLM, and it appears that the additional languages are not yet available for Gemini. If you wish to start using it without delay, NotebookLM is accessible for free, and those on Google’s One AI Premium plan can also use NotebookLM Plus.
