Dutch neobank Bunq introduces cryptocurrency trading service.
Dutch neobank Bunq has introduced a cryptocurrency trading service today, offering access to over 300 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. The service is available to Bunq users in the Netherlands, France, Spain, Ireland, Italy, and Belgium, facilitated through Kraken, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges globally. Bunq intends to "gradually expand" this offering to the rest of the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK, and the US.
"Our users worldwide have long awaited a simple, safe, and straightforward method to invest in digital assets," stated Ali Niknam, the bank's founder and CEO. Niknam, who will present his growth strategy at the TNW Conference on June 20, established Bunq in 2012. The Dutch unicorn has grown to be Europe’s second-largest neobank, boasting over 17 million registered users, second only to Revolut's 50 million users.
The launch of its inaugural crypto service follows a period of significant growth for Bunq, which reported €85.3mn in profits for 2024, representing its second consecutive profitable year and a 65% increase from the previous year. The company has also recently sought banking licenses in the UK and the US.
With its entry into crypto trading, Bunq is entering a competitive market, facing rivals such as Revolut—the leading neobank in Europe and the most valuable fintech firm. Revolut has been offering crypto trading since 2017, allowing users to buy, hold, and exchange digital assets within its app.
Typically, neobanks earn revenue from crypto through transaction fees on trades or conversions. Although the cryptocurrency market has seen significant volatility in recent years, it is widely expected to grow considerably in the coming decade.
