Meta has been involved in the AI landscape for some time, but in contrast to ChatGPT, its models are primarily embedded within existing platforms rather than functioning as independent applications. However, that changes today with the introduction of the Meta AI app, which appears to match and even expand upon ChatGPT's offerings.

Utilizing the latest Llama 4 model, the app aims to "get to know you" by analyzing your interactions and pulling information from your public Meta profiles. It's primarily voice-driven, and Meta asserts that it has enhanced the responses to feel more relatable and conversational. An experimental voice feature is also included, which users can turn on or off for testing — the notable distinction being that the full-duplex speech technology creates audio directly instead of vocalizing pre-written replies.

What sets this app apart from other AI chat applications is its integration with social media. While there are speculations about OpenAI venturing into social media, Meta has significantly outpaced them in this area. The Discover feed functions as a platform for users to share their favorite prompts, responses, and interactions with the AI, allowing friends and family to view them.

This feature is intended as a means to exchange ideas and explore new applications of the language model. Although not every AI interaction is particularly exciting, there are certainly times when users feel compelled to showcase notable AI-generated content — these moments would be the posts featured in the feed. However, I anticipate that these feeds will also include many humorous errors and misinterpretations.

The app is set to integrate with the Meta View companion app for Ray-Ban Meta glasses, meaning if you own these devices, you'll likely utilize the Meta AI app frequently. Otherwise, the app will also be accessible on desktop, where users can engage with the Discover feed, create images, and try out the in-development rich document editor.

For those familiar with Meta AI's gradual progression into the European market, it may not come as a surprise that many features of the Meta AI app are currently confined to the U.S. and Canada. However, if you are located in those regions, you can download the app immediately to explore these new features.

OpenAI divided text and image generation for a while, but that changed a couple of weeks ago when it incorporated image capabilities directly into ChatGPT.       OpenAI might start watermarking ChatGPT images — but only for free users

The recent buzz around ChatGPT's new image-generation capability continues. As usual, users have been exploring the app, and this time they discovered references to a watermark feature for generated images. Observed by X user Tibor Blaho, the code line image_gen_watermark_for_free suggests that this feature would only apply watermarks to images created by free users, providing another reason for them to consider switching to a paid subscription.
