Following in the footsteps of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman is no small feat. However, Jesse Plemons appears to be the fitting choice to portray Plutarch Heavensbee in the upcoming Hunger Games film.
Lionsgate announced on Friday that Plemons will take on the role of Plutarch in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. He will be part of a cast that includes Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, and Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner.
In the original Hunger Games trilogy, Plutarch Heavensbee is introduced in Catching Fire as the Head Gamemaker, taking over from Seneca Crane. By the conclusion of Catching Fire, it is revealed that Plutarch has been a double agent, leading the rebellion against the Capitol. Hoffman portrayed Plutarch in Catching Fire and Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2. Hoffman passed away in February 2014, but the Oscar winner had already filmed most of his scenes for the Mockingjay films.
Plemons has gained recognition as a talented character actor. He received an Academy Award nomination for his role in The Power of the Dog and earned an Emmy nomination for his memorable performance in Fargo season 2. Plemons and Hoffman shared the screen in 2012 in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, where Plemons played Hoffman’s son.
Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins wrote Sunrise on the Reaping, the second prequel to the original trilogy following The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Released last month, the book set sales records, selling over 1.5 million copies in English during its first week.
The film adaptation, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, will be directed by franchise veteran Francis Lawrence from a script by Billy Ray. Lawrence has directed every Hunger Games film except for the first one. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson will produce, while Cameron MacConomy will serve as executive producer.
The five Hunger Games films have collectively grossed $3.3 billion at the global box office.
