Apple - Apple Watch - Announcement
After years of speculation, Apple declared its plans to enter the smartwatch market in September 2014, launching the first Apple Watch on April 24 of the following year.
Now, exactly ten years later, it’s fitting to look back at the advertisements that showcased Apple’s first smartwatch.
The initial ad (above) marked the major unveiling in the autumn of 2014, providing potential customers with their first glimpse of the anticipated device. In true Apple fashion, the polished video begins with close-up shots of the Apple Watch, so intimate that it obscures any recognizable watch-like traits.
It isn’t until around 40 seconds in that we see the display for the first time, along with the Digital Crown, which serves multiple functions like scrolling, zooming, and accessing the home screen. Shortly after, we are officially shown the Apple Watch’s square shape, a design many analysts had anticipated.
Apple’s decision to go with a square design was unique and has become a fundamental aspect of the watch’s identity. Analysts noted at the time that this square form was more effective for displaying text, notifications, and app content than a circular screen, even though many competing smartwatches have succeeded with round displays.
As the advertisement continues, we get to see more of the watch, including its case and various bands. The introduction of gold and rose gold cases hinted at Apple’s aspirations for a range of luxury smartwatches, a plan that was later abandoned.
The second ad (below) was released in March 2015, a month prior to the watch's launch. This advertisement placed greater emphasis on the device's applications and features, which still look quite familiar today.
Over the years, Apple has refined the Apple Watch, giving it a larger screen while also introducing the more budget-friendly Apple Watch SE in 2020 and the robust Apple Watch Ultra in 2022.
The company is expected to continue its annual upgrade cycle with the Apple Watch Series, so anticipate the arrival of the 11th version later this year, likely in September.
Recently, Trevor transitioned from one tea-loving nation that drives on the left (Britain) to another (Japan).
The future of the Apple Watch SE 3 seems uncertain amid a potential price increase. Apple last updated its budget-friendly “SE” series smartwatch in 2022, priced at $250, which offered a satisfactory blend of wellness features, sleek design, and long battery life. However, since then, competitors like Samsung, OnePlus, and Mobvoi have introduced attractive value-focused models.
Currently, Apple has not made any announcements regarding the next Watch SE generation. It appears that the third iteration of the Apple Watch SE may take longer to arrive, and the delay might not be the result of strategic planning. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the more affordable model may be facing “serious jeopardy” due to hardware-related issues.
The report indicates, “The design team isn’t satisfied with the appearance, and the operations team is struggling to reduce the casing costs compared to the existing aluminum chassis.” It was also noted that Apple is experimenting with alternative materials to lower production expenses.
A significant shift
Apple Watch may receive a camera upgrade soon
Apple has not made any significant hardware advancements in health features for its recent smartwatches. The current Series 10 model is primarily a slimmer version of its predecessor, and next-generation capabilities like blood pressure monitoring appear to be facing challenges.
However, Apple could introduce a different type of sensor to its smartwatch that we are all familiar with. According to Bloomberg, the company plans to incorporate a camera into both the standard and Ultra models of the Apple Watch.
“The current concept is to position the camera within the display of the Series version, similar to the front camera on the iPhone. The Ultra will have a different configuration, with the camera lens located on the side of the watch near the crown and button,” the report states.
Interestingly, Meta considered this idea years ago but ultimately abandoned the project. It remains unclear when we will see these camera-equipped Apple Watch models in stores, and there are no details on the specific functions that these cameras will serve. Nonetheless, a brief look at Apple’s AI and health frameworks gives a solid indication.
It could greatly enhance wellness features
The Apple Watch critically needs the iPhone 16e upgrade
Apple is not quick to refresh its lower-cost products, but one model that desperately requires attention is the Apple Watch SE. The company’s decision to allow the SE to stagnate for several years is beginning to impact its financial performance. When the Apple Watch Series 11 launches later this year, the Apple Watch SE 3 needs to accompany it.
Feeling the impact
Shipments of Apple Watch models fell by 19% in 2024 compared to 2023, according to Counterpoint Research. A quote from the report noted, “The slowdown of the existing Apple Watch SE lineup and the absence of new SE models
