Step aside, Wordle: The New York Times has launched a new puzzle game

Following the continued success of Wordle, The New York Times has introduced its next addition to the Games catalog, and it revolves around math. Digits invites players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can currently access its beta version for free online.

In Digits, players are tasked with reaching a target number using six given numbers, employing various mathematical operations to get as close to that target as possible. Not all numbers need to be utilized, making this game a true test of your math skills as you strategize to create the right equations and approaches.

Players receive a five-star rating for exactly matching the target number, three stars for being within 10 of it, and one star for being within 25. Currently, players can explore five different puzzles with progressively larger numbers. I tried today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-based game that should appeal to inquisitive minds who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times titles such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.

In an article announcing Digits and outlining The New York Times Games team's development process, The Times noted that they plan to use this free beta to iron out bugs and determine if it should transition into an active development phase "where the game is coded and the designs are finalized." Therefore, take advantage of the opportunity to play Digits while it’s available because The New York Times may discontinue it if the feedback doesn’t meet their expectations.

Digits' beta is currently accessible for free on The New York Times Games' website.
