NYT Connections: clues and solutions for Tuesday, April 22.
Connections is among the top puzzle games from the New York Times. The game challenges you to organize a set of 16 words into four secret groups by determining how the words are related to one another. The puzzle resets every night at midnight, with each new puzzle offering a different level of difficulty. Similar to Wordle, you can track your winning streak and compare your scores with friends.
Some days may present greater challenges — akin to other favorites from NYT Games like The Mini and Strands. If you're struggling with today's puzzle, check out our guide on tips and tricks for Connections or look for hints for today’s puzzle below. If you’re still unable to solve it, we will provide the answers at the end.
**How to Play Connections**
Connections is a daily game focused on finding commonalities among words. Players select four groups of four words without exceeding three mistakes. Play now at: https://t.co/YITfSnqODb pic.twitter.com/CqObVOqeUs
— The New York Times (@nytimes) November 3, 2024
You can access Connections on the New York Times website or via the NYT Games app on iOS or Android.
In the game, you'll be presented with a grid of 16 words, and your goal is to categorize these words into four sets of four by identifying their connections. These sets might include themes like video game series titles, book sequels, shades of red, or names of chain restaurants, among others.
While certain words may seem to fit various themes, there is only one utterly correct answer. You have the option to shuffle the grid of words to help clarify potential connections.
Each group is color-coded: the yellow group is the easiest, followed by the green, blue, and purple groups.
Select four words and click Submit. If you’re correct, those four words will be removed from the grid and the theme connecting them will be revealed. An incorrect guess counts as a mistake, and you have a total of four mistakes before the game ends.

**Who oversees the NYT Connections game?**
Wyna Liu, who has been editing puzzles for The New York Times since 2020, edits Connections on a daily basis.
“A few months ago, a new task came my way: Create the game boards for Connections, a category matching game that had recently been approved and needed an editor," Liu noted in an article describing her process in June 2024. "Most of my experience has been in crosswords, and I was eager to try something different. I’ve enjoyed understanding how puzzle editing evolves once a game is green-lighted and seeing how our team fits into a larger system.”
On the one-year anniversary of Connections' launch earlier this year, Liu shared this TikTok about her favorite puzzles so far:
