It has been a widely known secret that Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy is working on his own Star Wars film. What we were unaware of was that this project will bypass most of the other Star Wars films and is set to be released close to the 50th anniversary of the franchise. During the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Lucasfilm officially announced Levy's film, revealing that Ryan Gosling, from Barbie, will star in Star Wars: Starfighter.

The original Star Wars premiered on May 25, 1977. Starfighter is scheduled to be released 50 years and three days later, on May 28, 2027. Filming will commence this fall. Both Levy and Gosling took the stage in Tokyo for the announcement. Levy also mentioned that the story takes place five years after The Rise of Skywalker, but it's not a direct sequel to it.

"This is a standalone," Levy said via The Hollywood Reporter. "It’s neither a prequel nor a sequel. It’s a fresh adventure set in a time period we've yet to explore."

Gosling remarked that "this script is exceptional. It has a fantastic story with original and engaging characters. It’s filled with heart and adventure, and there's no one better suited to direct this story than Shawn."

Levy was reportedly in the running for Avengers: Doomsday before the Russo brothers stepped back in to direct that film and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. Now, Doomsday will be released just a few weeks before Starfighter. In May 2018, both Avengers: Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars Story were launched within weeks, with only the former achieving significant success.

During the Celebration event, Lucasfilm also confirmed that Simon Kinberg’s new trilogy is still in development alongside films from Dave Filoni, James Mangold, Donald Glover, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Taika Waititi.

After the disappointment of The Acolyte, it’s time for Star Wars to return to the big screen.

It has been five years since the release of Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker. In that period, Lucasfilm has introduced The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and the second and third seasons of The Mandalorian. While the studio's television offerings have been, with a few exceptions, fairly average, its film efforts have been non-existent. The Rise of Skywalker, which received largely negative reactions from fans and critics alike, remains the latest Star Wars film.

Following the release of The Rise of Skywalker, it made sense for Lucasfilm to take a step back and reevaluate its plans for feature films. A hiatus didn’t seem like a bad idea at the time. However, five years later, along with several mediocre TV shows, it's hard to overlook the lack of fresh, truly cinematic Star Wars experiences. The franchise, once a source of wonder that sparked the imaginations of millions, has started to feel disappointingly repetitive, risking the visual splendor of the Star Wars universe being forgotten.

Shawn Levy’s Star Wars film has found a writer.

Shawn Levy is heading to a galaxy far, far away and he’s bringing along a collaborator. According to Jeff Sneider of The Insneider, Jonathan Tropper will write Levy's Star Wars movie. Levy and Tropper have previously worked together on various projects, including 2014's This Is Where I Leave You and 2022's The Adam Project, with the latter being Netflix's third-most popular film in its history.

10 best Star Wars shows ever, ranked

Before Disney+ debuted in 2019, there were no live-action Star Wars shows, and only a few animated series. The earliest Star Wars cartoons from the 1980s, Droids and Ewoks, had little resemblance to the films. Years later, Star Wars: The Clone Wars laid the groundwork for the franchise's revival in animation, ultimately leading to The Mandalorian and subsequent live-action shows.

To celebrate the release of The Acolyte, we're looking back at the 10 best Star Wars shows to date. However, we retain the right to adjust our rankings as more Star Wars series become available on Disney+ in the future.
