Sony
In 2002, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland teamed up for 28 Days Later, a post-apocalyptic horror film focusing on a virus that transforms humans into frenzied, zombie-like beings. Nearly thirty years later, the rage virus returns with ferocity in 28 Years Later.
Sony has released two impressive trailers for 28 Days Later, including one that debuted today. Accompanied by a voiceover of Rudyard Kipling’s poem "Boots," the fast-paced, intense action unfolds at a thrilling speed. The breathtaking visuals appear as if they were captured with state-of-the-art IMAX cameras, though that is not the case.
28 Years Later was filmed using an iPhone.
According to WIRED, 28 Years Later was recorded using an iPhone 15 Pro Max. These devices were enhanced with various attachments and adapters, a benefit of the film’s $75 million budget. Producer Andrew Macdonald later shared with Empire that Boyle also utilized drones, digital cameras, and traditional film cameras in addition to the iPhones. Nonetheless, it is still a remarkable achievement to create a blockbuster using a smartphone that many carry in their pockets.
In 28 Years Later, Britain has fallen into chaos. A small group of survivors resides on a secluded island linked by a heavily fortified causeway. When a father and son venture from the island to explore the mainland, they uncover “secrets, wonders, and horrors of the outside world.”
The cast of 28 Years Later includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes.
Boyle directs 28 Years Later from a screenplay by Garland. This marks the third installment in the 28 Days Later franchise, following 2002’s 28 Days Later and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later.
28 Years Later is the inaugural film in a new trilogy. The sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Garland, is set to be released on January 16, 2026.
28 Years Later will premiere in theaters on June 20.
