3 must-watch Hulu movies to stream this weekend (April 18 – 20)

In light of the success of A Minecraft Movie at the box office, our first thought for this week's update was to recommend some excellent Jack Black films available on Hulu. Unfortunately, there are currently no standout Jack Black movies on Hulu. Year One and Gulliver’s Travels fall short of showcasing his best performances. However, while we can’t suggest any of Black’s films on Hulu, there are three outstanding movies on the platform that you should check out this weekend.

The first is a fantastic crime thriller that went largely unnoticed last year. Our second choice features Jude Law in a unique thriller that dramatizes perilous events from the early '80s. Lastly, our third selection presents a captivating romance between two of the most recognizable TV personalities of their time. This pairing on screen is surprisingly effective.

Looking for more suggestions? We also offer lists of the best films on Netflix, the best films on Hulu, the best films on Amazon Prime Video, the best films on Max, and the best films on Disney+.

      Lake George (2024)

      Magnet Releasing

Shea Whigham from Boardwalk Empire takes on a compelling leading role in the neo-noir thriller Lake George. After serving a decade in prison for insurance fraud, Don (Whigham) finds himself with nothing left to lose. His benefactor, Armen (Glenn Fleshler), has evaded the consequences of their actions and refuses to repay Don for his debts. Instead, Armen wants Don to eliminate his ex-girlfriend, Phyllis (Carrie Coon).

Fortunately for Phyllis, Don prefers her plan. She suggests they collaborate to steal Armen's hidden cash and escape town to start anew. However, executing this plan proves to be much more challenging. Although Don may have exchanged one manipulative figure for another, Phyllis appears to have genuine intentions beneath her schemes. Perhaps they both have a chance at achieving what they truly deserve.

      The Order (2024)

      Vertical

The Order is loosely inspired by real events from the early '80s. Bob Mathews (Nicholas Hoult) leads The Order, a militant group that is far too extreme for the broader white supremacy movement. Mathews is not satisfied with merely watching other races be oppressed; he aims to instigate a race war and topple the U.S. government. He has just enough followers to pose a threat.

FBI agent Terry Husk (Jude Law) and novice police officer Jamie Bowen (Tye Sheridan) share a goal: to thwart Mathews' plan before it escalates further. As their investigation heats up, it becomes increasingly perilous for both Husk and Bowen.

      Enough Said (2013)

      Searchlight Pictures

James Gandolfini, known for The Sopranos, takes on one of his final big-screen roles in Enough Said alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus from Seinfeld. This romantic drama/comedy features Gandolfini and Louis-Dreyfus as Albert and Eva, two single parents who share many similarities. Despite Eva’s initial hesitations, she enthusiastically enters into a relationship with Albert.

However, Eva harbors a secret from both Albert and his ex-wife, Marianne (Catherine Keener). Eva has close ties to both of them and fears losing either relationship by exposing her conflicting connections. While this secrecy may jeopardize her bonds, concealing the truth won't benefit Eva in the long run.
