NYT Connections: clues and solutions for Thursday, April 17

Connections is regarded as one of the top puzzle games from the New York Times. The challenge involves sorting a selection of 16 words into four concealed groups based on their relations. The puzzle refreshes every night at midnight, with each new version presenting a different level of difficulty. Similar to Wordle, players can track their winning streak and compare scores with friends.

Some days may present more challenges than others, akin to other popular NYT Games like The Mini and Strands. If you're facing difficulties with today’s puzzle, refer to our Connections tips and tricks guide for helpful strategies, or look at the hints provided for today’s Connections puzzle below. And if you still can’t solve it, we’ll share today’s answers at the end.

      How to play Connections

You can play Connections on the New York Times website or with the NYT Games app for iOS or Android.

In Connections, a grid featuring 16 words is presented to you, and your goal is to categorize these words into four sets of four by identifying their connections. These sets could include themes such as titles of video game series, sequels of book series, various shades of red, names of chain restaurants, and more.

Although some words may appear to fit multiple themes, there is only one definitive answer. You can shuffle the word grid and rearrange the words to better identify possible connections.

Each group is color-coded. The yellow group is the easiest to decipher, followed by green, blue, and purple groups.

Select four words and click Submit. If your selection is correct, the four words will be removed from the grid, and the connecting theme will be unveiled. An incorrect guess counts as a mistake. You have a maximum of four mistakes before the game ends.

Who is responsible for editing the NYT Connections game?

Wyna Liu, who has been editing puzzles at The New York Times since 2020, oversees Connections on a daily basis.

“Several months ago, I received a new task: Create the game boards for Connections, a category-matching game that had just been approved and needed an editor,” Liu explained in an article detailing her process in June 2024. Most of my experience in puzzle editing has been with crosswords, and I was eager to try something new. I have enjoyed learning how the editing process works once a game is approved and how our team integrates into a larger framework.”

On the one-year anniversary of Connections launching earlier this year, Liu shared a TikTok highlighting her favorite puzzles thus far:
