The term "Ultra" has swiftly become a way for brands to highlight their top smartphone innovations in key areas that customers prioritize. Popularized by Samsung's Galaxy S20 Ultra, nearly every brand has introduced an Ultra contender over the past five years, with many not available in Western markets. Samsung’s latest Galaxy S25 Ultra and competitors like the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and Vivo X100 Ultra share features such as superior cameras, large displays, substantial batteries, and a high-end overall experience.
It is in this context that Oppo unveiled the Oppo Find X8 Ultra last week. After spending nearly two weeks with Oppo's flagship device, I believe it establishes a new benchmark for Ultra phones. The main drawback? It's exclusively launching in China. The upside? It comes with a very reasonable price tag. Here’s why it sets the new standard for Ultra phones.

**Oppo Find X8 Ultra Design**
I extensively used the Oppo Find X7 Ultra last year, and it quickly became one of my favorites. While it had some notable issues, its uniqueness helped it stand out. Much of this was due to the distinctive two-tone design, blending a glass back with an appealing leather finish and unique details around the camera housing.
This distinct design aspect continued from the Oppo Find X6 Pro, but unfortunately, the Find X8 Ultra foregoes this unique finish for a more standard matte glass. It does, however, reduce thickness by 0.7mm and slim down the sizable camera bump. Initially, I was disappointed with the absence of the leather finish, though the sleeker design allows for better usability—a trade-off I appreciate, even if I wished I could have both.
The Find X8 Ultra is slightly heavier than its predecessor, but the slimmer camera bump contributes to a better weight distribution, preventing a top-heavy feel. Like the Oppo Find N5, it features flat edges, enabling it to stand upright. These modifications align it better with industry norms.
The power and volume buttons are on the right side, with a recessed camera control slider below, inherited from the Oppo Find X8 Pro. Unlike that model, though, the camera control offers improved travel, although its positioning can lead to accidental zooms while capturing photos—therefore, I disabled the zoom function, leaving it as a reliable camera shutter button.
A significant addition is the new shortcut button on the left side, replacing the trademark alert slider. Similar to the OnePlus 13, this multipurpose button can be tailored to launch specific apps, activate shortcuts, or access particular features within an app. This implementation has become my go-to,
