It’s the final countdown for Tony Gilroy in the Star Wars universe.
For the past decade, Gilroy has been involved in two Star Wars projects: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Andor. The latter is set to return on April 22 with its second and final season on Disney+. Gilroy has spent a considerable amount of time in this galaxy far, far away, and due to the critical acclaim of Andor, many fans are advocating for him to take on another Star Wars project. However, Gilroy is ready to move on and pursue other endeavors outside the Star Wars franchise.
“I feel like I’ve contributed enough for now,” Gilroy said to The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet at the Andor season 2 premiere. “I’d like to work on something different for a while. It’s not that I wouldn’t consider it in the future, but for now, I want to return to directing a film, perhaps.”
Andor tells the backstory of Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, a petty thief who will evolve into a key leader of the Rebellion. Season 1 takes place five years before Rogue One, while season 2 will span the final four years leading up to the events of the film. This season will have 12 episodes, divided into four chapters of three episodes each, with each chapter representing a year in Cassian's life.
Andor season 2 features Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Genevieve O’Reilly, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Faye Marsay, Varada Sethu, Elizabeth Dulau, Alan Tudyk, Ben Mendelsohn, and Forest Whitaker.

Season 1 was met with widespread acclaim upon its launch in September 2022, with many praising it as Lucasfilm’s finest Star Wars series. The first season of Andor earned three Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series.
Although Gilroy is eager to step away from the Star Wars universe, he feels immense gratitude for his work on it.
“I don’t think it's an exaggeration to say that this is the most significant work I will ever have the chance to be part of,” Gilroy remarked about Andor. “It’s a substantial part of my life. We essentially made eight movies over five years; that’s how we perceive it,” referring to the episodic format.
The first three episodes of Andor season 2 will debut on April 22 on Disney+.
