Move over, Wordle: The New York Times has a new puzzle game
The New York Times has launched a new title in its Games catalog following the success of Wordle – and this one focuses on math. Digits challenges players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can currently play its beta for free online.
In Digits, participants are given a target number they need to match. They receive six numbers and can perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to approach the target as closely as possible. Not all numbers must be used, adding further complexity to the challenge as players combine numbers and formulate the correct equations to reach the desired number.
Achieving an exact match with the target number earns a five-star rating, getting within 10 earns three stars, and getting within 25 grants one star. Players can also try five different puzzles that feature increasingly larger numbers. I solved today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-based challenge that should attract those who appreciate puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times games like Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article discussing the launch of Digits and outlining how The New York Times Games team develops its games, The Times states that the team will use this free beta to identify and fix bugs, determining if it should progress to a more active development stage where coding and design finalization occur. Enjoy Digits while it's available, as The New York Times may choose to discontinue the project if the reception isn’t as favorable as anticipated.
The beta version of Digits can be played for free now on The New York Times Games' website.
