A compact version of the famous New York Times crossword, The Mini offers a quick and convenient way to challenge your crossword abilities each day in significantly less time (the typical puzzle takes most players just over a minute to complete). Although smaller and simpler than a standard crossword, it can still pose challenges. Getting stuck on a single clue could mean the difference between achieving your best completion time and having a frustrating attempt.

Move over, Wordle: The New York Times introduces a new puzzle game

The New York Times has launched its next title in the Games catalog, following the success of Wordle — and it focuses on math. Digits requires players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can currently play its beta version for free online.

In Digits, players must match a given target number. They are provided with six numbers and can combine them through addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to get as close to the target as possible. Not every number must be used, making this game a true test of your math skills as you work to create the correct equations to approach the target number.

Players will earn a five-star rating for matching the target number exactly, a three-star rating for being within 10, and a one-star rating for being within 25 of the target number. Presently, players can also tackle five different puzzles featuring progressively larger numbers. I completed today’s puzzle and found it to be an engaging number-based game that should attract curious minds who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times offerings like Wordle and Spelling Bee.

In an article introducing Digits and outlining the New York Times Games team's development process, The Times stated that the team plans to use this free beta to correct bugs and evaluate whether it's worth advancing to a more active development phase, “where the game is coded and the designs are finalized.” So be sure to try Digits while you can, as The New York Times might abandon the project if the response isn't favorable.

You can play the beta of Digits for free now on The New York Times Games website.

Wordle’s remarkable year: New York Times analyzes the phenomenon of 2022

If you logged onto Twitter exactly one year ago, you likely remember the moment your feed filled with gray, yellow, and green boxes. Although it launched in 2021 and gained popularity in December of that year, Wordle became a sudden cultural sensation in early 2022 that was nearly unavoidable without muting words. It represented a unique gaming success story, appealing to a broad audience due to its elegant simplicity.

Wordle's popularity escalated as rapidly as its user base. In late January 2022, The New York Times announced its acquisition of the game from creator Josh Wardle in a low seven-figure deal, a surprising move that nearly overshadowed Sony’s announcement regarding its acquisition of Destiny 2 developer Bungie just hours earlier. The takeover sparked concerns among fans who feared that corporate ownership could compromise the game's independent spirit.
